Granny Smith

Granny Smith Apples are available from
May until October.

Granny Smith apples are bright green, with white flesh, very juicy and very firm. Their flavour is pleasantly
tart-sweet, with a crunchy texture.

Granny Smith apples are most often used in baking preparations because of their high acidity and ability to hold their shape under cooking. Bake into sweet or savoury pies, tarts, or meat pastries; add to savoury bread stuffing, risotto or potato pancakes. Grate and add to fritter or donut dough, or steamed dumplings. Add diced apple to fresh salsas or cheese spreads.

Pair with nuts and cheeses in sandwiches, or fall fruits such as persimmons, cranberries and pomegranate in fresh salads. Keep dry and refrigerate until ready to eat or use.
Geography/History of Granny Smith apples:
Cultivated for more than one hundred forty years and named in honour of Maria Ana (Granny) Smith, this apple's accidental beginning was the result of crab apple seeds that somehow found their way into her garden. Having its origins in Australia, this apple remains a celebrated fruit in that country. Every October, a grand festival in this renowned apple's honour is held in Sydney, Australia, commemorating the works of Maria Ana (Granny Smith).
This apple matures six weeks after the Red Delicious.
